Extract of a letter from Ireland to a friend in this city, dated 1st inst.

"The bearer can inform you of the malignant and ferocious state of the lower class of people, in this and adjacent counties, particularly Roscommon and Longford. On the morning of the 22d, certain Mr. Simpton who you know is preparing such an extensive insurrection in this district, accompanied on the alert by a Mr. Burke and nine others in uniforms to act as ringleaders, four miles from this, in order to seize on an unwary innkeeper where this were surrounded and attacked by a posse of about 200, who style themselves "defenders," and carried most of the victims to the hands of the cruel insurgents; and such was the inhumanity of the assassins, that they mangled and disfigured their dead, particularly Mr. Simpton. The last account we had with the facts of them fraternizing, in recovery at going common, assembled and conspired in masses right one mile of this town, in a place called "the Sole Park" on the other side-Corkare. Where they reviewed and formed in rotated themst. that oddle. aid as the turning of the 25th, set themselves in military form, in regard to Christ Church, where they were repelled by the Londonderry militia, and charged to disperse with the loss of 18 killed and four desperately wounded. They were in number about one thousand. They proved themselves dastardly, cowardly knaves.

It is supposed their intent was to consume Donaghmore by fire. However the inhabitants that evening were reinforced by an augmentation of the stout Londonderry militia, and a detachment of the North Dragoons. Mr. Waldron with several gentlemen, on the 25th, brought the entire force to the place where the murders were committed, took many prisoners on suspicion, and consumed every house in the neighborhood. The well minded here are in a perplexed situation; they cannot attend their business. This kingdom has all the appearances of a total emancipation, or of being like France."
