Probably no country takes religion more seriously than India does," says Bishop Brenton Badley, representing the Methodist Episcopal church in Bombay. "It is not surprising, therefore, that half the world's great religions were born in India—Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.
The other three great religions were also born in Asia—Christianity, Mohammedanism and Confucianism.
All the great religions of the world have come from Asia."
That is something the western world, especially America, is inclined to forget.
There is a widespread feeling today, in East and West alike, that a new religious impulse is needed—not necessarily a "new religion," but a quickening of the everlasting religious verities. The West may be, as yet, too materialistic for spiritual leadership. Is Asia done? Is India done?
Bishop Badley thinks not.
"India is coming to be recognized more and more," he tells Americans, "as an exponent of the idea that power is based on something else than material forces. Gandhi is considered great because he has sought to use the power of man as against the power of matter.
India believes that the time has come in our world for a new civilization. She will find it ultimately in a true Christian civilization. But our western, so-called Christian nations, are not yet exemplifying it in their national and international life and dealings."
Can India show us a larger Christianity than we have yet realized?
