In Bad Health
The Journal is in a bad way. The symptoms are alarming considering the location of the disease and that the mercury ranges up among the nineties.

The Journal never said a word in favor of General Chamberlain for Governor, but advocated the claims of Mr. Spring who was not a soldier, and did all it could to have Chamberlain defeated.

It is sorry that Lieut. Whitcomb is appointed Postmaster of Ellsworth, a soldier who had the credit of keeping his company in the best order of any in the regiment and who always did his duty.

We took the liberty of suggesting that after taking this course deliberately,—a course in direct antagonism to the soldier, that it was not very consistent to step forward at the eleventh hour as the soldier's especial friend, nor very modest in it to come forth and proclaim whom the Union voters in the County may select candidates from. Were we out of the way? We suppose the voters are of age, and that it is safe to calculate that they know something.

The Journal's personal history has nothing to do with the questions we put, or the statements we made last. Nor has ours. However, if the Journal editor has any personal friends, they can do him no better service than to put a padlock on his lips. If he was as injudicious while in the field as he is now in wielding the pen, his men were to be pitied. If the public cared a fig for his history, we have some facts with which to supply the omissions in his personal account, which would render the narrative more perfect. The Journal editor had no truer friend, nor one that gave better proof of friendship, than the editor of the American. We don't propose to fortify this statement at this time because there is no call for it.

Does the Journal propose to go into personalities? Can it not advocate the claims of General Caldwell in good temper?— Must it sink the man, and go to throwing dirt? when, too, it was all meekness and fairness when it launched its bark on the sea of politics?

We wish to be frank with the Journal and our readers, therefore we assert that the Journal was started to run down the Ellsworth American, and to run up the Journal: to run up General Caldwell, and down whosoever came up for Congress in opposition to him, in Hancock County or any other County. This is our understanding of the work laid out for the Journal and the cause of its being born into the world. Now let us propose that both the Journal and the American shall accept this statement as the true one of their relative positions, and then go about our duties in a fair way and as neighbors. We are willing certainly that the Journal should support the General for Congress, and will submit as well as we can, if it "runs us of the track." We hope to keep on good terms also with our neighbor, because we have been friendly in the past, and because we have rendered him, we hope, some personal service and should be extremely sorry to find that our good opinion had been without good foundation.
