KING AND QUEEN HELP DESTITUTE

Catania, Dec. 30.—King Victor Emmanuel and Queen Helena arrived at Messina today and immediately joined the rescue party and labored as unremittingly as the others. The king personally extricated several injured persons from the ruins. The queen devoted her attention principally to the suffering little children. She herself rescued a 3-year-old boy, bleeding from many cuts and bruises.

An overpowering stench is beginning to arise from the ruins of Messina. Ten thousand soldiers will be required to bury the dead there.
