HONEST AT HEART
The foreign world has jumped to the conclusion that all our exposures of insurance graft, meat fraud, railway rate unfairness and other irregularities on immense scale show the American people as a mass to be dishonest and ready to stoop to anything to get the almighty dollar.
Maybe a large proportion of our own people have been led to the same conclusion.
Certainly these disclosures have shown widespread dishonesty in many great and representative departments of business.
But if the American people as a mass are dishonest, why these disclosures?
If the methods that have been exposed meet with the approval of the people of the country, why the loud remonstrance and stringent legislation against them?
The light of religion has illumined the question. Dr. Carroll, a Cleveland minister, has put into two sentences a whole volume of truth.
"The recent exposes of the manner of procedure of great corporations and their managers has been one of the most hopeful signs of better times.
The deep feeling of resentment that has swept over the country when the facts became known showed that the hearts of the American people as a whole are sound and right."
