Student Tours Of Vepco Plants Honor Edison

High school students at Farmville, Worsham, Cumberland, Concord and Appomattox, numbering 42 with four faculty representatives, toured the Bremo plant of Virginia Electric and Power Company, Thursday.

The visit was in commemoration of the birthday anniversary of Thomas Alva Edison. Students were given a guided tour of the power plant by Vepco representatives and were luncheon guests of the company.

More than 1300 students visited Vepco plants in Virginia and North Carolina during the week to observe the 112th birthday anniversary of the inventive genius. His birthday, Feb. 11, was designated Science Youth Day throughout the nation.

The company reports the tours, now in their third year, were designed to make high school students aware of the growing need for engineers in industry and tell the story of the free enterprise system which has made this country what it is today, according to A. H. McDowell, Jr., Vepco president.

The students watched giant coal conveyor belts, furnaces, boilers, central control rooms, chemical labs and closed circuit television sets, used in control operations.
