THE BOSTON & MAINE STRIKE.

ALL THE TRAINS MORE OR LESS DELAYED.

The Strikers Endeavoring to Hire the Engineers who Have taken their Places.

PORTLAND, February 13. The morning train on the Boston & Maine left all right, without any disturbance. The train which left Kennebunk last night, came in this morning, and the same engineer took out the nine o'clock train. The misstatements of engineers caused the delay, it being understood that they would simply leave their engines.

The striking engineers are endeavoring to get away the men hired by the road, offering as high as ten dollars per day, but without success. The shifting engines are doing regular work with new engineers. The trouble has been mostly between Portland and Berwick.

Applications are coming in thick and fast from engineers and firemen, for places made vacant by the strikers.

Freight trains are lying still, but will probably be started during the day. The police are on duty, and every precaution has been taken to secure the passengers' safety. Property is to be protected at all hazards. The train due at 12:10 was fifty-six minutes late at Dover.

The three o'clock train went out on time. An engineer from the Boston & Albany road ran the engine. A large crowd was in attendance. Knots of men were discussing the situation, and police on duty keeping order. When the time for starting came, the engine came out with three policemen on it, hooked on and started without any demonstration.

The train from Boston at three arrived at eleven o'clock. Two engineers were induced to leave on the route, and the train was brought in with third procured at Exeter. Four drivers were got away from the company by the strikers to-day who remain firm.

BOSTON, February 13. The trains on the Boston & Maine left here as usual, to-day. All inward bound trains, however, were late, owing to the new men being strangers on the road. The depot has been crowded all day, and a large force of police is on duty. No violence was offered the new men.

Mr. Arthur, head of the Brotherhood, threatens to stop every road running out of the city, if they persist in lending their engineers and firemen to the Boston & Maine.

LAWRENCE, February 13. The Boston & Maine management has sent out all the morning passenger trains from this city to Boston, on time, except the 9.10 A. M.

The Portland morning express due at that time had not arrived at 11.30. To accommodate the Boston & Maine passengers the Lowell ran a special at 10 A. M. B. & M. tickets of all kinds are received on the Lowell, but the engineers of the latter road will not haul B. & M. cars.

Two shifting cars are at work in the B. & M. freight yard, and the mill corporations are having their freight cared for as usual.

GREAT FALLS, February 13. The Great Falls Branch train on the Boston & Maine has not moved to day. The locomotive was fired up, but no order came to start it. Smart's train, which went out as usual this morning, is the only train that has passed over the branch to-day. Conductor Stevens has a sleigh running between here and Rollinsford to carry passengers and mails.
