COOPER SHOPS.

The manufacture of barrels and consequently the utilizing of vast quantities of hoop poles and staves is an important industry which is worthy of more than passing notice.

These shops not only use an abundance of the raw material which grows in this vicinity, but they employ quite a number of laborers who are a direct and positive benefit to our city. These manufactories number four, as follows:

J. B. & W. Wittrock, at the corner of Elm and Front streets, have four buildings wholly devoted to the manufacture of flour barrels and all kinds of tight barrel work, such as syrup and pork barrels and ginseng casks: one building is a two story brick 24 by 60 feet: 2 frame buildings each 24x44 feet and 1 frame building 16x24 feet. The brick and one frame building are used for manufacturing while the others are ware rooms.

The firm employ twenty-four men and have employed during the busy season as high as thirty. They have made since last Sept. about 54,000 flour barrels, besides other work above enumerated. They consume nearly 500,000 hickory hoops a year. All their flour barrels are used by the big mill.

Mr. William Pearson, erected last September two cooper shops, each 25x60 feet, at the corner of Third and Washington streets and commenced the manufacture of flour barrels for the big mill. He employs twelve men and will soon increase his force to fourteen. He turned out from Sept. 1, 1881, to Jun. 1st, 1882, 72,000 barrels. He purchased in that time 160,000 hickory poles, and has on hand at present 200,000 shaved hoops. The Mill Co. furnishes both Wittrock and Pearson their barrel staves which are purchased by the car load at Menominee, Wis.

Richard Brothers 723 South Front street, occupy a shop 25x80 feet and employ fourteen workmen.

They make both tight and slack work from a common horse pail to a fifty gallon cask. They have been running since August, 1881, and have in that time turned out 17,000 barrels of various kinds. They sell all their flour barrels to the big mill. This firm has purchased the past winter, 120,000 hoop poles. They make butter tubs for W. T. Mills and Long, and ship to adjacent towns much of their other tight work which is sold on commission.

H. M. Karmany, on upper Front street only manufactures tight work such as pork and syrup barrels and liquor kegs. He sells his products to Karmany and Davis' meat markets and P. H. Carney.
