Full Text

The good and humane Howard, who is now gone to Constantinople, to endeavour to put a stop to the ravages of the plague, will have numberless difficulties to encounter, though if any person can surmount them he will; among others, is the custom of the Turks wearing the furs, &c. of the people who die with that distemper, and their firm belief in the Mahometan doctrine of predestination; a doctrine that has brought their empire to its present state, as actuated with this belief, the Turks rush to battle with the ferocity of tygers, and the bravery displayed by some of them in the last war with the Russians is incredible, they have drove on to the very mouths of cannon, though death was the inevitable consequence.
