Captain of Rutland Hose Company—Had Three Sisters Here.
While driving to a fire in the city of Rutland Tuesday evening, J. F. Corey, first assistant engineer of the department, and captain of hose company 1, was killed. He was driving the hose cart and in turning from Merchants' Row into Center street, by the sudden jerk of one wheel he was thrown from the seat. The wheels passed over him, crushing in his chest, breaking several ribs, etc. He gasped once or twice after being picked up and died.
Corey was born in South Dorset where his parents now reside. He also leaves a wife and four children.
He had been connected with the paid department of Rutland since its organization ten years ago. Three of his sisters live here, Mrs. Wm. Tiffany, Mrs. Asa Harwood and Miss Rose Corey. His wife, Miss Lizzie O'Brien, also formerly lived here.
