A dispatch from Worcester, Mass., dated the 23d inst., says an explosion of nitro-glycerine took place in that city at twenty minutes past ten to-day, killing Timothy Cronan, an Irishman aged twenty-two years, and injuring about thirty other persons, none of them dangerously. Twelve houses were demolished and many others badly shattered. The shock was felt all over the city. Bells were rung and crockery and furniture broken a mile distant. The cause of the mischief was nitro-glycerine that had been smuggled into a car and addressed to North Adams and intended for Hoosack tunnel. The wounded were kindly cared for by physicians. The scene of the disaster was visited by over fifty thousand people. It is most astounding that only one life was lost and so few seriously injured. The man killed was walking on the track at the time of the explosion. The nitro-glycerine was in the last car of the freight train. Three cars were demolished, and heavy bars of iron were thrown nearly a quarter of a mile. The shock was distinctly felt at points twenty miles distant. The damage is estimated at $150,000.
