FROM COVE DISTRICT.

Editor Jeffersonian :
The farmers in Cove are busy harvesting. Their faces which looked unusually long owing to the dry weather, are now having a more natural phase by reason of the recent refreshing showers.

The steam sawmill, owned by John F. Woodford, will soon be moved to the farm of Isaac Martin where it will probably remain until next spring.

One of our townsmen went to the woods about half a mile from his residence, a few days since, with his gun, for the purpose of committing suicide, but upon examination the gun was found to be unloaded, and on returning to his house for ammunition he concluded to live yet a little longer.

A few nights ago twelve disguised men paid a midnight visit to Henry Gragg, two of the crowd entered the house and notified Gragg that his presence was needed outside. He violently objected but the spokesman brought the argument to close by placing a huge revolver in close proximity to his head. They took him about a quarter of a mile from his house and all that there and there transpired will probably never be known, but from what we can learn they thrashed Gragg after first threatening to hang him.
This taking of the law in their hands, by the lynchers, is probably intended to break up the stealing which has been carried on to such a lively extent in this neighborhood for the last ten or twelve years. All of the lynchers were disguised completely, and Gragg says none spoke save one who acted as leader and spokesman: The neighbors all say "vive la" lynchers.
