LOST.
BY NED SMALLFELLOW.
"Lost! Lost! Lost!"
A bachelor's big warm heart;
Or else some fair maiden has stole it away
By the aid of her magical art--
How gloomy the desolate void in my breast,
For the heart of my youth is not there.
Some genii has stolen the spirit of rest,
And I sup with the demon--Despair.
"Lost! Lost! Lost!"
A heart that has ever been true--
A heart that is free from the mildew of guile
And dripping with poesy's dew;
And Mercy will flirt on her gossamer wings
To smile on the fate of the maiden who brings
In her fairy-like hand that lost heart back to me,
And will publish the deed from the land to the sea.
"Lost! Lost! Lost!"
From the place where it never had strayed.
A heart that had never been conquered by love;
A heart that had ne'er worshipped in maid!
I lost it one eve when a pair of bright eyes
Was beaming in radiance near,
As I dreamed that an angel in heavenly guise,
Like a vision of Love did appear.
"Lost! Lost! Lost!"
A heart from its home in my breast;
If the finder returns it her pathway will smile
With the bliss-giving light of the blest.
Must I pray for the heart that is missing in vain?
Then life will be dreary and lone!
Will the maid that has found it restore it again?
If not, will she give me her own?
