WASHINGTON, D. C. - Protest against the discriminatory practices that continue to plague Negro travelers in railroad and bus stations in too many sections of the South, was registered with the chairman of the Interstate Commerce Commission by a special committee of executive board members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Inc., last Monday.
The committee met with Mr. Kenneth H. Tuggle, chairman of the Commission; Mr. A.H. Walter, chief of the Department of Inquiry and Compliance, and a representative of the commission's legal staff. They were assured that all of the facilities operated by the carriers (trains and busses), were subjected to the law banning racial discrimination in interstate travel. This included train and bus seats, waiting rooms, or any other facility operated by the carriers.
Chairman Tuggle further urged that complaints should be filed immediately by all persons who experience racial discrimination in travel, and promised prompt and effective measures to see that such violations are corrected.
Meeting with the Commission were: Rev. Martin L. King, Jr., president of SCLC; Rev. J. E. Lowery, second vice-president, and Rev. Ralph D. Abernathy, secretary-treasurer.
