The first really earnest and honest snow storm of the season, begun here on Monday evening, and continued all night with a blustering northeast wind. The snow was light and drifted considerably. About eight inches fell here on the level, a sufficient quantity and evenly enough distributed to make good sledding. The railroad men grappled with the storm and showed themselves equal to the emergency. The Pullman train east yesterday morning and the passenger trains east and west yesterday ploughed through the drifts, and were but about an hour late. East of us there was a foot or more of snow fell. At Brunswick six or eight inches fell during the night. The strong northwest wind drifted the snow badly. About the same quantity fell in Farmington. We hear of large quantities of snow in several localities previous to the late storm. From a foot to a foot and a half fell at Fryeburg Sunday night, which added to their already liberal supply, causes some discussion as to the propriety of erecting snow sheds over the settlements in that section. They tell marvelous stories of the depth of the fleecy but obstructing element up in the White Mountain region where it ranges anywhere from four to thirty feet deep. A private letter from Strong, Franklin county, states that the depth of snow is sufficient in that section to require the breaking out of the highways.
