CROSS-ROADS

How can I be sure, dear,
You will understand
Since we have no language
Of the lips and hand,
We who meet like spirits
With no kiss or touch,
Speak with words alone, dear,
Words that cover much?

How can I be sure, dear,
You will sympathize,
Since we speak together
Only with the eyes?

I am of the earth, dear,
Hunger gnaws my heart,
Agony to see you,
Agony to part.

How can I be sure, dear,
If my hunger leap
Out beyond my ruling
Our bond will keep?

If you do not hunger
What am I to do?
There'll be no returning
To the comradeship we knew.
