Nippon Threatens To Isolate British Hongkong Settlement As Eastern War Tension Grows

Reprisal Move Against English Made After Japan Charges Violation Of Nine Power Pacts

TOKYO Aug 19 -(INS)-In reprisal for Britain's refusal to take unilateral action regarding Chinese currency as demanded by Japan. Tokyo Saturday threatened to "isolate" the crown colony of Hong Kong from the mainland in a move which would be tantamount to a blockade. Japanese war and foreign office authorities discussed Britain's refusal to take action to release Chinese silver held in the British concession at Tientsin, or regarding British support of the Chungking dollar. without consultation with America. France and other signatories of the nine power pact. They decided to "reserve the right" to determine whether the Anglo-Japanese discussion in Tokyo should be resumed. Simultaneously. from Canton came word that military authorities regarded the eventual "isolation" of Hong Kong as "inevitable." The Japanese army announced today it had gained control of Chinese territory along the boundary of this British crown colony. Japanese units were said to be holding all important points and roads from Deep Bay. northwest of Hong Kong. to Mirs bay, on the northeast. British troops had taken precautionary positions on their side of the 13-mile land boundary. The local Chinese press reported today Japanese planes bombed Sian. capital of Shensi province and Loyang. northern Honan. yesterday. causing several score of casualties and extensive property damage

From present indications it looks like McAllen is in for another bumper tourist crop this season. Miss Ruth Clark. chamber of commerce secretary. reported Saturday that inquiries had already been received from. Minnesota. Mississippi and Kansas from persons wanting to visit the Valley this winter. H K Hasness. who's sojourning in New York state. writes from Watkins Glen that the Valley must do a lot of advertising before it becomes well known in the East. The Valley and McAllen. in particular. however. got a good plug in the August 6 issue of the Elmira. N Y. Sunday Telegram. when a series of pictures showing cotton picking and ginning in Texas were carried . . . A clipping. forwarded by Hasness. showed that McAllen was mentioned prominently in the cutlines of the broadside . . . In his letter. Hasness said the only people up in that neck of the woods who know anything about the Valley are those who bought groves . . . Hasness writes: Have been asked why pink grapefruit are pink. Texas is best known here for pink grapefruit. The white ones are supposed to come from Florida: Joyful H B. Edwards. the department of agriculture man. says he is going to stop chasing pink boll worms for awhile and go to Saltillo. There are only three things to do during the summer. says Jack Wilson. local auto salesman . . . Take a vacation. go fishing. or keep on working . . . . Jack complains he has no money for a vacation and the fish won't bite. Ira King. local inspector for the oil and gas division of the state railroad commission. worked for four years in South America for a major oil company before taking up his present duties several months ago . .. King hails from Raymondville. We don't know where he learned how. but Earl (Squirrel) Ziebelle. local photographer. is one of the town's best male cooks . . . He can cook up a sirloin that would win a blue ribbon in any cooking contest. Although they don't look so military now. C. J. Fitz and Frank Hayes used to go to Western Military Academy together.
