We alluded a few days ago to the fact that six officers and the Surgeon of the 14th Regiment, Indiana volunteers, had resigned under peculiar circumstances. One of the parties, Capt. N. S. Thompson, called upon us yesterday and stated an account of a scouting expedition in which he and his company were engaged, and in which they behaved most gallantly. Capt. Thompson desires us to say that he resigned because he could not obtain a furlough, and that the condition of his private affairs made it necessary. He resigned on the 22d day of August, and the other officers on the 24th. The following is his letter of resignation, which will speak for itself:
CHEAT MOUNTAIN, Aug. 22.
BRIG. GEN. J. J. REYNOLDS-Dear Sir: Owing to private business matters I am compelled to tender my resignation. Without my personal attention immediately, I may lose the greater part of all I am worth. Let me hear from you at your earliest convenience, and oblige,
Yours truly,
N. S. THOMPSON,
Capt. Co. E, 14th Reg. Ind. Vol.
A prominent officer in the army in Western Virginia writes as follows, dated Cheat Mountain Pass, August 25th, 1861, in reference to the resignations, and upon whose report we predicated our remarks.
I forward to-day the resignation of six officers of the 14th regiment-their regiment is now in the advance and it is very difficult to understand why they should now be so anxious to resign. It is believed they are hoping for promotion in new regiments. Their example is a very bad one.
We take great pains in stating these facts in justification of Capt. Thompson. It is not necessary for us to further vindicate his gallantry, or the motives which prompted his resignation.-Fort Wayne Sentinel.
