HILO SCHOOLS ARE GROWING

Miss Deyo's Figures Tell Need For New Building

HILO, Hawaii. March 2.-

In answer to a request made by the Tribune Miss Deyo has kindly compiled a statement with reference to the public school attendance in Hilo during the past, coupled with an estimate of what it will probably be in the future. These figures are in the main the same as those furnished the Board of Trade by Miss Deyo, which have been sent by that organization to Superintendent of Public Works Campbell. They will be of the greatest value in the matter of securing the new Union School building in Hilo, with the changes required for the addition of a third story when such becomes necessary, such as have been recommended by the Board of Trade.

Miss Deyo's figures are as follows:

Attendance in town class room of the Hilo Union School: Feb. 23. 1906, 358 pupils; Feb. 21, 1907, 392 pupils: Feb. 21. 1908. 459 pupils: Feb, 23, 1909, 494 pupils.

This is a gain of 35 per cent. in the three years. These figures show the actual attendance of pupils on the dates given, not the number of pupils on the rolls.

Hilo Union School and "Feeders"

The town class rooms 484 pupils. The primary "feeders" at Waiakea. Uka, Waiakea-kai. and Haahco, 271. Total, 755.

There are at present in the Waiakea Settlement Kindergarten 40 pupils. Hilo Free Kindergarten, So of school age not in any school. about 40. Total, 160.

Of these 160 probably 80 will come into the primary departments in September, which increased by the usual number of new children moving into this community, will no doubt swell the number of new pupils to 125. Allowing a loss of 50 who will go out. either on account of promotion or dismissal to other schools, we must provide for 830 pupils in September. This, is a conservative estimate.

About 525 of the 830 will be in the town class room. In this connection it should be noted that by December the school is usually larger than in September. I should not be surprised if the number were 550 by then.
