BALTIMORE, January 10.

A letter from a gentleman in Annapolis to his friend in this town, says, "Last evening Mr. Webster began his lectures in the state-house, before a respectable audience, composed of the inhabitants and members of the legislature. The Governor was engaged last evening, but will attend the next lecture. After what has been said and written upon the English language, I did not expect much novelty, especially from an American.—But I was agreeably surprised when I found that many of Mr. Webster's remarks were new, and expressed with uncommon clearness and accuracy. He has pursued his criticisms, to a greater length perhaps than any English writer, and even ventured to call in question some of their opinions that have hitherto passed for truth. The elegance of his style, the energy of his reasoning, profound knowledge of the subject, and especially the candour and independent spirit with which he delivers his sentiments, are well calculated for a reform.

Should his attempts to correct and refine our native tongue, meet with that liberal encouragement which they deserve, and which the attention paid to them seems to promise, Great-Britain will yet be indebted to America for the last improvement in the language."
