POETRY.

FOR THE GAZETTE,

No muse's favour here I ask,
To aid my fair design,
Friendship impels the pleasing task
And breathes th' unpolish'd line.

It pleads, in accents void of art,
Fair virtue's sacred cause,
And whispers to Philpot's heart
Its mild and gentle laws.

That heart, where purity and truth,
Their varied powers combine,
Those powers, which make the morn of youth,
With Heav'n's own lustre shine.

Ah! let not gay delusion veil
The graces of thy mind,
Nor error's sombre arts assail,
The virtues there enshrin'd

Let folly's thoughtless sons in vain
Their gay example plead;
Philpot asks a fairer name,
And claims a nobler meed.

Genius and learning's nervous powers
Thy fair fame shall raise,
Whilst wisdom, on life's chequer'd hours
Its piercing light displays.
