Announcement of the scholarship aid available for graduate study at Atlanta University was made at the annual Senior Day program this week. The university was host to the senior classes of Clark, Morris Brown, Morehouse and Spelman Colleges for a discussion of the opportunities for graduate study at the university and for an informal social hour.
In the Graduate School of Arts and Science and in the professional schools of Business Administration and Education scholarships ranging from $200 to $500 are available. The graduate degrees in biology, chemistry, economics, English, French, history, mathematics, political science, and sociology and anthropology are offered in the School of Arts and Sciences.
In the School of Library Service there are four fellowships of $500 each and ten of $300 each which have been established by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
In the School of Social Work, in addition to 15 to 20 tuition scholarships of $300 offered by Atlanta University, there are six fellowships of $1,600 each for students in the field of psychiatric social work and four fellowships of $800 each in vocational rehabilitation. The fellowships in psychiatric social work and vocational rehabilitation were established by grants from the federal government.
The Walter Francis White Memorial Scholarship of $500 is offered by the National Alumni Association of Atlanta University and will be awarded to a student who wishes to enter the graduate department of sociology and work in the field of race relations. For this scholarship the student must submit, in addition to the usual documents, a written prospectus of not more than 1,000 words setting forth his plans for his graduate work and his aspirations for his career, as well as a written recommendation from one professor in his major department.
Applications for scholarships for the academic year 1956-57, which may be obtained from the Office of the Registrar of Atlanta University, should be returned to the Registrar before May 15. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of ability and need.
