Three men from the Columbus County Area were enlisted in the U. S. Army and U. S. Air Force during the month of February according to an announcement made by Sfc. Creston H. Rowland, Jr., U. S. Army and U. S. Air Force recruiting Sergeant for that area.
Two men were enlisted in the Army. They were Oliver A. Johnson of Whiteville, who enlisted as a Corporal for three years in the Quarter-Master Corps, and Cleveland M. Wright of Route 1, Tabor City, who enlisted in the Coast Artillery Corps for three years. Johnson, who was a veteran, was shipped to Fort Dix, New Jersey for processing and assignment to the Third Armored Division at Fort Knox, Kentucky for basic training.
The lone Air Force enlistee was William F. Spivey of Tabor City, who enlisted for four years. He was shipped to the Air Force Indoctrination Center at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
Sgt. Rowland also announced that the quota for Wilmington Recruiting Station for the month of March,
