Atlanta, Ga., July 16 -- Clark College in Atlanta, Georgia, has received a grant of $10,000.00 from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Michigan.
The grant has been made by the foundation "in recognition of the importance of the small, private, liberal arts college to American higher education." It has been designated for purchase of books "to improve the quality of the teacher education program and to increase the effectiveness of library services generally."
Identical grants were made to six other Georgia colleges as part of a six-year program which will involve giving $2,500,000.00 to 250 American colleges.
Clark College's Department of Education will reap most of the benefits of the grant, although the books purchased with the funds will generally increase the library's effectiveness for all students.
With a faculty that has been intact for fourteen years and is staffed entirely by holders of doctorate degrees, the Department has produced numerous principals, supervisors and teachers for Georgia school systems and for points as far distant as Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. The Department produced two graduates who in the past four years became "Georgia State Teachers of the Year" and countless other teachers who have been cited for distinguished service.
In announcing the grant, Clark College President, Dr. James P. Brawley called it "another notable example of the recognition of the importance of colleges like Clark and of the need for more and better teachers in America." Dr. Brawley said "the Kellogg Foundation's grants to these liberal arts colleges will make an immeasurable contribution to fulfilling the need for better teachers for generations to come."
