LAWS OF A DEMOCRATICK GOVERNOR
In the State of New-York, last year, they elected Daniel Tompkins, a democrat, for their Governor, to serve three years : and now they begin to reap some of the blessings of his reign. They have established in that State a State Conscription-law, kindly, I suppose, to inure the people to the thing, before the national government laid on their shoulders an additional blessing of the same kind. If we, in this State, are ambitious of sharing the blessings which are always attendant on democracy and war, let us by all means choose for our Governor a man like Gov. Tompkins, and then we shall have the blessings of Conscription, or Classification, or Drafting, all three meaning the same thing—viz.—the privilege of fighting and of dying in the bed of honour, whether we will or not, thus making heroes of us all.
