NEWPORT, MAY 28.

Early in the Morning of the 25th Instant, a Detachment of about 500 Men, under the Command of Lieutenant Colonel Campbell, of the 22d Regiment, Embarked on board Flat-bottom Boats, and covered by the Men of War, proceeded up the River, and landed between Bristol and Warren, from whence they passed over to Kickemuit River, where they destroyed 125 large Boats, a Galley with the Guns belonging to her, and a Schooner laden with Stores. On the Return of the Troops to Warren, they found in that River a Privateer Sloop of 16 guns, which was destroyed, also a Magazine there and some Houses. The Troops then proceeded to Bristol, destroyed another Magazine and a Part of that Town, after which they deliberately re-embarked at the Ferry under cover of the Frigates and Gallies, with the greatest Regularity.

In this Rout the Troops found a considerable Number of Cannon, which were mostly spiked and otherwise damaged, and the Carriages of many of them burnt. Between 60 and 70 Prisoners, were taken on this Occasion, 7 of which were Officers -- some of them of Rank. The Loss sustained by the King's Troops was, Lieutenant Hamilton, and 12 Privates wounded, none mortally, and two Drummers missing.

At two o'Clock the same Morning the Niger Galley, with 6 armed Barges passed through Bristol Ferry, to destroy a Galley the Rebels had in the Mouth of Taunton River; the Boats going there, found and took Possession of her without any Loss. She carried two Eighteen Pounders, two twelve Pounders, and six six Pounders, and had on board 16 Hands.

About the same Time the Boats of the Alarm Galley, burnt the Enemy's Guard-House at Fogland Ferry.

The good Conduct of the Officers and Men on this Occasion deserves every Encomium, and has received the warmest Approbation of his Excellency General Pigot.

The Officers of the Navy employed in this Transaction, have by their spirited Conduct acquired much Honor.

Possibly the Destruction of these Boats may save the Credit of Mr. Sullivan, and furnish him with a sufficient Excuse, when the next Court of Enquiry may be called to investigate his Reasons for delaying his Attention to the important purposes of his Appointment.
