Chief Bob Oliver has just returned from a most worthwhile 10 days of indoctrination, in both crime and fire prevention. He stated he was amazed to hear how many times Nome was mentioned in the crime conference, as the place where many of the 122 known traveling criminals pass through on the way in and out of the bush.
These offenders include parole and probation violators, etc. and are known on police records as professional criminals. The crime conference was attended by representatives from the FBI and other organizations whose common interest is to enforce the law.
The fire seminar, taught by men of many years experience, was a pattern of tracing the source of fires, and instructions in tracing as well as preventing. Nome is to have instruction this summer in both fire and crime prevention.
Also the invitation has been extended to Nome to send someone to the State Police Academy and for fire fighting of aircraft at Eielson Air Force Base.
Chief Oliver plans to call a meeting of bicyclists to learn the Rules of the Road before someone is hurt through neglect or carelessness.
