For the Morning Star.
NEW YEAR.
The beginning of another year is admirably calculated to produce in the bosom of every person, the most tender feelings. Who can review the mercies of the past, and the blessings of the present, without peculiar and lively sensations? Who can look abroad into the world and see the horror and bloodshed, which have existed in many places, and return to his own happy country; to the embraces of a tender family, without feeling gratitude as incense rising from his heart? Whilst we acknowledge the hand of God in bestowing upon us great and unnumbered blessings, which have rendered us temporally happy, let us not forget his beneficence as it respects spiritual favors. The value of the immortal soul has been exhibited to us in its clearest light. All the motives which three worlds present to view, have been presented to men to persuade them to forsake sin and love holiness. And who yet remains without a well-grounded hope, in the dying love of a bleeding Saviour? Who is still willing to remain another year out of the ark of Christ? Who will continue to trample under his feet the precepts of the Great Lawgiver of heaven?
Let such an one stop and reflect. Have you not already crucified the Lord of life and glory long enough? If not, how much longer will you go on, to heap up wrath against the day of wrath? When will you have made yourself miserable enough on account of sin?
I pray you, O sinner, turn and look at your condition and ask if you must, if you are resolved to spend this year also in sin? Say, what is it contents you to sport upon the threshold of ruin, as if you were safe as within Heaven's gates? Have you covenanted with death that he should not come near you? Are you yet living in sin upon the uncertainty of future years? O deluded, unhappy soul! A mortal, thinking being! If you do not choose eternal burnings, turn to God this very day. But remember that if you will go on in sin, that ere this year may roll away, you may awake in everlasting ruin.
