Who initiated this Greeley movement? Not the great mass of thinking, working men of the country, who are crying "corruption in office!" Not the honest yeomanry of the land. Who cry "anything to beat Grant?" Only the rabble, disappointed and revengeful politicians. What have the industries of the country suffered through Grant's mis-government? Who or what locality has been deprived of the liberties to which good citizens are entitled, through Executive usurpation? What policy has the dominant party forced upon the country to its disadvantage? What has the Nation suffered in its diplomatic relations through inefficiency, or corruption? In what respect, and to what degree has the dignity of the government been diminished by the personal character or official action of the present Executive?
These are plain questions, to which the people will require unequivocal answers. Grant was elected upon a platform which pledged an impartial execution of the laws, a faithful collection of the revenues of the country, and a reduction of the public debt. With many of the sources of revenue entirely cut off, General Grant has in the same length of time collected twice the amount which went into the Treasury during Andy Johnson's term. The laws have been enforced to the satisfaction of all those who needed protection, and the debt has been paid off at the average rate of fifteen millions per month during the last three years. With this, the tax-payers are satisfied; the office-seekers are not. The friends of good government say "well done." The "reformers" (?) cry "anything to beat Grant."

The Greeley papers in Minnesota support the Cincinnati candidate by noting that government officials are friends of General Grant, but the text argues that every administration relies on friends and questions the origins and validity of the Greeley movement, attributing it to rabble and disappointed politicians. It poses rhetorical questions challenging criticisms of Grant's administration and highlights Grant's achievements in revenue collection, law enforcement, and debt reduction compared to Andy Johnson's term.
