The Clayton Snow, Patrick, of Liverpool, 200 Tons, a Lion's Head, taunt Masts, square rigged, has 4 two Pounders, and ten Swivel Guns, carries two Top-gallant Yards, swims by the Head, and sails well on a Wind, but indifferently large; Was taken in March last, off Fernando Po, on the Coast of Africa by a Pirate, which was the Three Sisters Long Boat, Jenkins of Liverpool. The Pirate took the Opportunity of rushing up under the Lee Quarter of the Clayton when her Hands were forward except the Captain and Gunner, and then entered with Sword and Pistol in Hand, and wounded the Captain in several Places, and so took the Ship, kept the Crew in Irons one Night, and the next Morning put them on Board their own Long-Boat, and turned them adrift. They had on Board their Long-Boat (which was large, with a Cuddy, and built for trading, and sent out with 9 Men and a Boy from their Ship a Manchoa) a Bale of Scarlet Cloth, and another of Handkerchiefs, and told the Clayton's Crew that if they would go a roving they should be clothed with Scarlet, four voluntarily entered, and they picked the chief Mate, and two Boys. Scarcey, one of the Clayton's Crew, gave this Account to Capt. Buckle at the Island of St. Thomas on March 30th last, and says they were twelve Days before they could get into the River Bonny, where the King of the Country seized the Long Boat, whereupon he entered on Board the Susannah of Bristol, and the Rest of the Crew in different Ships.
