Full Text
The American Envoys to France took leave of the First Consul on the fourth day of October. It is judged necessary to mention that circumstance, because, in transcribing the article for the Mercantile Advertiser of Tuesday morning, we stated that the ceremony took place about mid-day of the twelfth. To make this erroneous statement wear the appearance of probability, the printers of the other papers altered either the date of the article, or the time of taking leave, each according to his own particular judgment. The fact is, the convention was signed on the Ninth, the entertainment was given on the Eleventh, and the Envoys took leave on the Twelfth--but it was the month Vendemiaire, of the Republican calendar, corresponding with 1st, 3d, 4th of October. They were at Havre on the 8th.
