A number of good stories center
around General Lord Rawlinson, who
for 40 years was connected with the
British army in India. The general
was brought prominently before the
British public even by being home on
furlough. While he was in command
of a column during the South African
war, Lord Rawlinson was constantly
sending in demands for heliographs,
with no result. At last when drawing
near Kroonstad, in what was then
the Orange River colony, he signaled
again to ask whether his heliographs
had arrived. Officialdom, however, was
rampant, and wanted to know "What
do you want them for?" Back went
the reply with caustic brevity, "To fry
kidneys on, of course!"
