EXTRACTS From The JOURNALS of
THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES.
Monday January 15
The Speaker laid before the House letter from the Auditor of public accounts, accompanied by sundry documents from that department for the information of the General Assembly: the said letter being read, was, on motion, ordered, with the accompanying documents, to be laid upon the table.
An engrossed bill "To amend an act entitled an act, incorporating a company to establish a turnpike road from the Little river turnpike road to Fauquier courthouse." was read a third time, and a blank therein filled up, and passed.
An engrossed bill "For adding part of the county of Patrick to the county of Grayson," was read a third time and passed.
An engrossed bill, "Concerning Yeates's free schools in Nansemond county," was read a third time and passed.
An engrossed bill "Concerning the Little River Turnpike Company," was read a third time and passed.
An engrossed bill "To establish an inspection of Tobacco in the town of Piscataway in the county of Essex;" was read a third time and passed.
The House, according to the order of the day, proceeded by joint ballot with the Senate to the choice of a Treasurer for one year, and the members having prepared tickets and deposited the same in the ballot boxes, Messrs. Otey, M'Farlane, Lewis (of Botetourt), Smith (of King George), Taylor, Tazewell (of York) Moseley, Garrow, Payne, Madeira, Dunton and Jones (of Warwick), were named a committee to meet a committee from the Senate, and jointly with them examine the ballots and report to the House on whom a majority of votes should fall; the committee then withdrew, and after some time returned into the House, and Mr. Otey reported, that the committee had, according to order, met a committee from the Senate, and jointly with them examined the ballots and had found a majority of the whole number in favor of John Preston, esquire.
A message from the Senate by Mr. Nelson:—
Mr. Speaker—The Senate insist on their amendment to the bill "To amend the act, entitled an act, to reduce into one act the several acts concerning the court of appeals" and they have agreed to the following resolution, to which they desire the concurrence of the House of Delegates:
Resolved, That the House of Delegates be requested to appoint a committee, to meet a committee of the Senate in free conference to try, on the amendment proposed by the Senate to the bill "To amend an act, entitled an act, to reduce into one act the several acts concerning the court of appeals" And then he withdrew.
A motion was made, that this house do insist upon their disagreement to the amendment proposed by the Senate to the said bill;
And the question being put on the said motion for insisting on their disagreement, it passed in the affirmative: Yeas 95 Nays 67.
The House proceeded to consider the said resolution proposed by the Senate on the subject of appointing a committee of conference; and the same being twice read, was agreed to by the House Yeas 163 Nays 3.
Ordered, That Messrs. Otey, Wooding, Wyche, Thompson, M'Farlane, Brent (of Frederick) Jeffries and Tucker be a committee on the part of this House to meet a committee from the Senate in free conference on the subject of the aforesaid amendment.
Ordered, that Mr. Wooding acquaint the Senate therewith.
