Sped on her way by the cheers of many of the local Japanese, and amid the bursting of fireworks, the Japanese training ship Anegawa departed at 10:25 this morning for Sasebo and other Japanese ports.
There was a large crowd of Japanese on the naval dock to see the vessel which represents their sovereign sail away for the land they all call home. The Japanese Consul General and his suite, accompanied by a number of the more prominent members of the Japanese colony, went out in a launch to bid the ship a final farewell. Daylight fireworks were discharged from the launch, some of them of beautiful designs. There were a number of bombs sent up which were supposed to burst and display Japanese and American flags. Strangely enough, the Japanese flags opened out beautifully, but the American flags, for some peculiar reason, sank without opening. The parachutes supporting them failed to work.
As the tug Fearless cast off from the ship, the Anegawa blew three long blasts of her whistle and proceeded on her voyage to the land of the Mikado.
Last night was a joyous night aboard the Anegawa, judging from the noise that kept up nearly all night. There were sports of various kinds, wrestling, etc., and even two fights enlivened the proceedings.
There was much apathy shown among the white people when the Anegawa sailed. True, there were few American craft in the harbor, but the crews of none of them paid any attention to the Anegawa when she sailed. But one thing must be said for the sailors of the Japanese training ship: they behaved themselves remarkably well during the time they were in port. No trouble of any kind has been reported as coming from them. They evidently know how to conduct themselves in a foreign port, as individuals, at least.
