The Board of Health of the City of New York have lately reported a compilation of figures, showing the death rate in a number of populous cities of the United States and Europe for the year 1871, which will be found interesting and instructive:

Rate

Paris shows the greatest number of deaths during the year 1871, nearly 100,000, exceeding that of London by close on to 20,000. The Paris death rate was 18-1000ths greater than that of London. Buffalo, Washington and St. Louis show the smallest death rate in each 1,000 inhabitants. San Francisco is below the average, and Salt Lake a little above it. Havana stands next to Paris in the relative number of deaths. In the 35 cities named nearly, if not quite, half a million people were consigned to the narrow house of the tomb during the year 1871.
