Kadoka people have the taste to appreciate what is really good in music and entertainment and they may be assured that they will be highly pleased with the opening number of the Lecture Course this (Friday) evening. This number will be given in the Kadoka Opera House and will begin at 8:00 o'clock.
The entertainment will be given by Miss Hazel Belle Peak, Reader, assisted by Mr. James Dwight Daley, tenor soloist; Miss Isabel Craven, contralto soloist and accompanist for Mr. Daley; and Mrs. L. S. DuBois, accompanist for Miss Craven.
MISS HAZEL BELLE PEAK
Miss Hazel Belle Peak, though still a college student, being a senior in Huron College, has had splendid success as a reader in her work in South Dakota. She is a leader in college activities and is this year the editor of the College paper. She has taken training in elocution and dramatic reading under Elias Day, who is one of the finest entertainers in the country.
People who have heard Miss Peak have pronounced her a finer reader than the average Redpath Lyceum Bureau reader.
"Those who attended the recital given by Miss Hazel Belle Peak were favored by one of the best numbers in the line of entertainment ever presented in the city. The audience at all times showed its appreciation of each number as offered."—Broadland News.
Lawrence L. Lewis, of the Redpath Lyceum Bureau, says concerning her work: "Miss Peak, by her excellent rendition of humorous selections, both American and Swedish, caused everyone present to be convulsed with laughter."—Huron Alpha Omega.
Miss Peak is so perfectly natural that you forget that you are listening to a reader. If you like to laugh, if you like to listen also to the pathetic, if you want entertainment which you do not like to see come to a close, then do not miss hearing her this evening. Her readings will be equally entertaining to both old and young.
The following are comments on Miss Peak's reading:
She has taken training in elocution and dramatic reading under Elias Day, who is one of the finest entertainers in the country.
MR. JAMES DWIGHT DALEY
Mr. James Dwight Daley, who will assist Miss Peak, is a musician of considerable ability. He was connected for several years with the Yankton Conservatory of Music, as a student, and is a graduate of that institution. He has toured the state a great deal with different organizations and has never failed to please his audiences.
The Yankton papers have the following to say of Mr. Daley's singing:
"Mr. Daley, whose excellent and well-trained tenor voice is fully appreciated by Yankton music lovers, had a difficult evening's work before him, but was in splendid voice and thoroughly pleased all who heard him. Mr. Daley was uniformly good throughout, with a true appreciation and interpretation of numerous solos,"—Yankton Herald.
"Mr. Daley gave a telling interpretation of Campbell Tipton's 'Spirit Flower,' showing fine contrasts of tonal effects with clear enunciation remarkable even in finest pianissimo. A comparatively small share falls to the lot of the tenor in the cycle, but his one solo, the Water Nymphs was a distinctly telling effect in the whole."—Yankton Press.
MISS ISABEL CRAVEN
Miss Isabel Craven will also assist Miss Peak, as a soloist and as Mr. Daley's accompanist. Miss Craven needs no introduction musically or otherwise to the people of Kadoka. Her training at Yankton and Sioux City has tempered her unusual abilities and has given her the name of being one of the best contraltos in the state. She was a member of the Yankton College Quintette which toured the state last spring with considerable success.
A comment upon her singing during the tour follows:
"Miss Craven is the possessor of a most promising contralto voice of growing richness wholly enjoyable in the quieter solo which was her part in the cycle and blending pleasantly in the duet with the soprano."—Yankton Dakotan.
There are six numbers on this course. Three of these are lectures and three are entertainment numbers. The lectures will be given by President O'Harra of the State School of Mines. Judge McGee of Rapid City, and President Gage of Huron College. One entertainment number will be by the Dakota Wesleyan Entertainers and another by home talent.
Admission to single numbers will be 35 cents for adults and 20 cents for school children. Season tickets $1.50 and 75 cents. Family season tickets $4.00.
The expenses of the course are not yet guaranteed. If you like to encourage this kind of entertainment purchase a season ticket if possible. Tickets may be purchased from the committee, at the Kadoka Drug Store, or at the door this (Friday) evening.
