San Francisco, Dec. 27.
The heaviest earthquake ever experienced in Eastern California and Nevada, occurred about six o'clock last evening. It was felt more or less severely in Sacramento, Marysville, Grass Valley, Nevada City, Stockton, Chico, Truckee, and other neighboring towns. At Virginia City, Nevada, fire walls were thrown down; shot bells rung, clocks stopped, dogs howled, horses snorted, on general consternation existed. The shock was felt severely in the lower levels of all the mines. The vibration south, lasted about ten seconds. At Reno, the shock was preceded by a low rumbling noise, which lasted nearly two minutes, greatly alarming the inhabitants. The express train bound west, was detained about an hour between Wadsworth and Reno, by large rocks and earth which was thrown on the track by the earthquake. The earthquake last night was felt throughout Western Nevada. The shock continued all night; the Virginia City down train on the Carson road was thrown from the track.
