Full Text

LILLE, (the Capital of French Flanders) Nov. 12.

Friday last a fifth part of our Townhouse was burnt to the ground, and all the papers belonging to the States were consumed: but the greater part of the loss falls on the poor and the orphans, whose money, which was deposited there; amounting to 9 or 10,000 livres, is melted, and scarce the half of it will be recovered among the ruins. All the registers and titles of the pious foundations for the poor are also burnt.

This fatal accident is ascribed to the carelessness of the servants in not extinguishing or properly securing the fire.
