Titos Settle, a leading Republican lawyer and parliamentarian from North Carolina, aged about forty-five, in public life since twenty-one, staunch Union man during the civil war, Speaker of the House and President of the Senate, elected associate Judge of the Supreme Court in 1868, appointed Minister to Peru in 1870 and resigned in January of the present year; selected as permanent presiding officer of the National Republican Convention as a compliment to Southern Republicans.
