ENDOWMENT OF COLLEGES, The devotion of our New England fellow-citizens to the cause of liberal education is worthy of all praise and of imitation too. In the annual report of the overseers of Harvard College, says the New Haven Journal, "we notice not less than nineteen bequests, which average more than $20,000 each! The available funds of the College, given for specific purposes, the interest of which only is used, exceed six hundred thousand dollars! The Law Department has funds exceeding $40,000, and the Theological School more than $80,000! This opulence is the result of individual liberality of citizens of Massachusetts." A munificent gentleman of New London, Connecticut, the Hon. Thos. Williams, has made a liberal present of $10,000 for the endowment of a professorship in the Beloit College, Wisconsin. The donation was made in Western lands -the value of which is reported to be greater than the amount specified. Mrs. Farwell, late of Cambridge, Mass., bequeathed her entire fortune, some $30,000 to Newton Theological Seminary, and to the Baptist Board of Missions. It is said that she and her husband, the late deacon F., gave not less than $100,000 during their lives to various benevolent purposes.
