Tobacco Markets
Postpone Opening
Three Put Back
Start to Sept. 2

Flue cured tobacco markets at Petersburg, South Hill and Lawrenceville have moved back their opening date to September 2 to coincide with the starting date of all Old Belt markets.

The three, organized recently as Southside Virginia Warehouse Association had earlier announced an opening date of August 24.

In announcing the decision to postpone their openings until September 2, Southside market representatives said that they could not be assured that all companies will be properly represented on August 24.

Lack of Buyers

Association directors said the postponement was made "as an accommodation to the buying companies the grading service and in the interest of the farmer and trade in general."

The three bolting markets now back in line had previously announced the intention of seeking affiliation with the Middle Belt of Central North Carolina. That belt has an early opening date each season, which Southside sponsors say would benefit Virginia bright tobacco growers.

No Action Taken

No action on the request for affiliation was taken, however and the new Association then announced it would operate independently and set an opening date of August 24 same as the Middle Belt.

C. H. Crowder, of South Hill Southside president, said last week that his group plans to continue its efforts to affiliate for 1955 with the Middle Belt.

Meanwhile, however the three now will open when other Old Belt markets do.
