piece addressed to the Public by a Mr. John
Mosby, who says he was raised in Powhatan; I
being also a native of that place, and not having
ever heard of a person of that name but myself,
I presume that there are some who may suppose me
to be the author. I, lest any unfavorable impression
should have arisen in the mind of any from such
a Supposition, and also deeming it an indispensable
duty, which I owe to my friends as well as myself,
to counteract any such impressions, I beg you
to insert this in your paper. Should any more
publications appear with the same signature, I
would thank you to date them at some place, so
as to leave no doubt with respect to the author:
by the doing of which you will oblige sir. yours,
JOHN GARLAND MOSBY,
Student of Wm & Mary College.
Williamsburg, June 14, 1804.
