Russell M. Bird, now completing his first four-year term as Sheriff of Summit County, is seeking the Republican Party's nomination for a second term.
Holding public office is not new to Sheriff Bird. He started his career in 1946 when he was elected Sixth Ward Councilman of Akron. He was reelected twice to that office and during his third term-on June 31, 1953--he became Mayor of Akron after Mayor Charles D. Slusser resigned.
Mr. Bird served as Mayor until December 1, 1953, the end of the unexpired term, after which he served as Councilman-at-Large in 1954 and 1955.
During 1955 he became Clerk of Akron Municipal Court, and on January 7, 1957. he became Sheriff, the office he still holds.
The candidate is seeking reelection this year on the record of public service he has made during his long public career.
Mr. Bird is married and his residence is at 212 South Broadway. He is married and is the father of one child. He is a Methodist and also holds membership in the Masonic Order and its various units and the Loyal Order of Moose.
