LOCAL PUGS FOR
CANANEA MATCHES

STRINKER AND BARNEY ARE TO
MEET AGAIN THERE.

Martin and Benson Will Be Brought Together - Ed Brown and Others Have Secured the Concession.

Ed Brown, who has been in the city for several days, made arrangements yesterday for a series of boxing contests to be pulled off at the Cinco de Mayo celebration in the big bull ring at Cananea.

With Messrs. Proctor and Myers, he has secured a concession for the fights from the Mexican government.

"The closing of the gambling games at Cananea," said Brown yesterday, "has left us without anything of an exciting nature, and we are going to try prize fighting. I am here to arrange for matches between some of the best men in the business at Bisbee."

Yesterday Mr. Brown was in conference with several of the local pugs, and at a meeting last night completed arrangements to have several of them go to Cananea and give the natives a chance to see what they can do in the ring.

The main event will be a fifteen round fight between Strinker and Barney, who put up a rattling go at the opera house a few nights ago. It is understood that both of the men are willing and anxious for another meeting, and they will now be given the chance at 158 pounds by Manager Brown.

Another match arranged is that between Joe Martin and Jack Benson, who will box fifteen rounds. These two men have never met, but have had goes with Jack Bolan, with the decision a draw in each case. They are fast men at about 135 pounds, and should prove a star attraction.

The two principal matches will be preceded by preliminaries between Kid Smith and Kid Conway and Ed McLain and John White. The latter pair are residents of Cananea. The exact dates for the matches will be given out later.

The fiesta at Cananea will begin the latter part of this month, and will last until after May 5th, which is one of the biggest of the Mexican holidays. Arrangements are now being made to run excursions from Bisbee to Cananea.

Brown promises that none of the fighters will be molested by the Mexican authorities, who have given him an ironclad concession for the contests. He says that if the first fights prove a paying venture he will arrange for others in the future.

"I will assure you of one thing," said he, "and that is that every one of these matches will be real fights. If any of the men try to fake they will have the Mexican officers to deal with."
