The Editor of the Boston Centinel exultingly mentions, that lately a liberty Pole (termed by him a Jacobin Pole) which had been erected at Dedham, had been prostrated with the dirt; and that one FAIRBANKS, a deluded ringleader, charged with being an accessory in erecting this rallying point of insurrection and civil war, was apprehended by the marshal of the district, accompanied by several good citizens of a neighbouring town, and carried to Boston for examination, part of which he underwent the same evening before Judge Lowell.
What !is it to be deemed seditious, and considered as an act of insurrection in our citizens to erect a Liberty Pole, reared in commemoration of our dear-bought Freedom and Independence , purchased with their treasure and their blood? Whilst we were in colonial subjection to Great-Britain, at the commencement of the revolution, it is well recollected that it was considered rebellion to erect this or any other emblem of Liberty. and any person was harassed and punished by the mercenary hirelings of George the Third for attempting it. But who would have believed it, had it then been foretold, that the People of America, after having fought even long years to obtain their Independence, would, at this early day, have been seized and dragged into confinement by their own government, for erecting a Pole in remembrance of that very Independence ? But so it is-
"Hail Columbia, happy Land"
