Spirit of the Press. The Mail of yesterday has articles on "self-reliance" and "Presidential perplexities," representing the advantages of the former and the magnitude and vexatiousness of the latter. The Enquirer, under the title "silly statesmanship," treats as an absurdity the idea which demagogueical politicians are endeavoring to impress upon the people of that country, that the powers of Europe are organizing a crusade against Democratic freedom, and that they will at no distant day fall with all the weight of their combined strength on the Republic of America. The Times comments upon Gov. Dickinson's letter and remarks upon the fierce denunciations of the Union for its attack upon him. To this strait, it says are, the Democracy reduced: The Southern apologists of the Administration, in order to justify their continued support of it are compelled to make desperate assumption that the administration organ at Washington, is constantly promulgating views which the President "does not approve." It was not so, it says, when the Whig administration was in power. The Democrats held the Whig Presidents responsible for every thing that appeared in the two Whig papers at Washington. The Whig on the "Fate of Turkey," suggests that there is no good reason for a longer delay by Russia, of its determination to appropriate to itself the vast Ottoman Empire, since the allies of Turkey are plainly prepared to leave her to her fate.
