Most People Think Liberty and License Same, He Declares.
"The Doom of the American Sabbath" was the text of a sermon by the Rev. William C. O'Donnell, pastor of St. Paul's M. E. Church, yesterday. He said the American Sabbath was instituted by the founders of the American nation, adding: The founders of our country were Sabbath keepers. They were noble men of many virtues and some excesses. The cry against Puritanism and for personal liberty today comes from the lips of men who understand little the real meaning of Puritanism or the fine distinction between liberty and license.
"Times and customs have changed here. Eight hundred thousand square miles of territory have become 3,000,000; 5,000,000 population have become 84,000,000. Here we are, 26,000,000 foreign-born or of foreign parentage. Here are Jews and seventh day people and Catholics, 14,000,000 of them, whose ideas of Sabbath keeping differ from those of our good ancestors, who gave meaning to the term American Sabbath. It is inevitable that as an institution it must undergo a change that will nullify its great purpose."
