The American Minister And the Irish Exhibition.— We find in the English papers a letter from Hon. J. R. Ingersoll, our Minister at London, addressed to James Foy, Esq., the American Consul at Dublin, May 8th, expressive of his extreme disappointment and mortification at not being able to attend the opening of the Irish exhibition. He says: It so happens that duties connected with the legation are at the moment such as cannot be dispensed with or postponed. Our Country is warmly attached to Ireland. She cherishes in her inmost heart the brave people of the Emerald Isle. I should be proud and happy to be the bearer of these sentiments on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition. Prevented from doing so, by being detained officially at my post, I shall still hope to exchange a cordial greeting with many of the inhabitants, and to tread the soil of Erin before returning to the United States. The papers say of the exhibition that it was opened on the 12th ult. with great splendor in a speech from the Lord Lieutenant. The weather was fine, and vast crowds assembled to witness the procession of lords and ladies. the Viceregal Government of Ireland, invited guests and their escort of several regiments of troops. No less than 15,000 persons were in the building on the first day.
