BARBAROUS MURDER.—Many of our readers have a melancholy duty to perform this afternoon, in attending the funeral of Mrs. Hawt, sister of Maj. D. Benjamin, Esq., who was killed on Thursday, at her residence in Long Island, by a colored man whom she had employed about her garden. The murder was committed suddenly, doubtless under the influence of mere brute passion.
Mrs. Hawt remonstrating with the man on neglect of orders, when he raised his spade and struck her a fearful blow on the head, following it up with another on the head, and a third on the back—either of them being sufficient to cause death.
She was taken into the house, and died—the murderer meanwhile quietly at his work, as if nothing had happened.
He was arrested and committed on a charge of wilful murder, found by the coroner's jury.
