Legal Tender Act.—A cause is now pending before the U. S. Supreme Court, which it is thought will elicit a decision of the question of the constitutionality of the U. S. legal tender act. The case comes up from Oregon, whose statutes require payment of taxes collected by the sheriffs to be made in coin to the several counties, by whom, in turn, they are paid into the State treasury. The sheriff in this case having paid the amount collected by him in currency to the county, alleges that he has thereby made a valid tender. The argument will be resumed to-day by Mr. Reverdy Johnson, who represents the State of Oregon. Senator Williams appears in the case as the representative of the county.
